It\u2019s something everyone worries about, and everyone wants to prevent.<\/p>\n

Burglary costs British homeowners hundreds of millions of pounds a year \u2013 there were 417,000 in 2018-19 alone, costing an average of \u00a33,000 each \u2013 and causes a level of stress and upset it\u2019s impossible to put a price on.<\/p>\n

Understandably, that\u2019s produced a whole industry for high-tech solutions designed to stop thieves in their tracks.<\/p>\n

But while sensors, cameras, and state-of-the-art electronic locks can be very effective, so can a much older, simpler solution \u2013 anti-climb paint.<\/p>\n

What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Anti-climb paint does what it says on the tin. It\u2019s a paint you apply to key areas around your property to make it much more difficult for would-be intruders to gain entry.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s non-toxic, petroleum-based \u2013 and, crucially, it doesn\u2019t set. That means it\u2019s permanently slippery, making it virtually impossible for thieves to scale walls, fences, roofs and any other surface it\u2019s applied to.<\/p>\n

It also makes criminals easier to identify and apprehend \u2013 anti-climb paint stains clothes and skin, often allowing police to catch thieves quite literally red-handed.<\/p>\n

How, and where?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Walls, roofs, drainpipes, guttering, ledges, lamp-posts, and CCTV camera poles are all prime places to use anti-climb paint. Burglars are nothing if not adaptable, and they\u2019ll use any surface they can to gain access to a property.<\/p>\n

To be effective, anti-climb paint has to be applied quite thickly \u2013 a layer that\u2019s 2-3mm thick is best.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s non-toxic, so it won\u2019t hurt anyone who comes into contact with it \u2013 and the same goes for animals, too. However, if you have pets, be wary \u2013 cats in particular are natural climbers, and if they come into contact with it, it\u2019ll take a lot of washing to get it out of their fur.<\/p>\n

The legal aspect<\/strong><\/p>\n

When using something like anti-climb paint, however, you have legal obligations you need to be aware of.<\/p>\n

Under the Occupiers Liability Act of 1984, homeowners have a duty of care towards people on their property \u2013 even if they\u2019ve come uninvited.<\/p>\n

That means you have to take reasonable steps to ensure that even intruders aren\u2019t harmed while in your home and garden \u2013 and while anti-climb paint itself isn\u2019t harmful, there\u2019s obviously potential for someone to try and scale a wall, get caught out by the paint and fall and hurt themselves.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re fulfilling your legal responsibilities if you put up clearly visible signs warning would-be intruders that there\u2019s anti-climb paint on the property.<\/p>\n

That way, if they still try and gain access and injure themselves in the process, they do so at their own risk.<\/p>\n

More generally, it\u2019s advisable to only use anti-climb paint in high places \u2013 ideally at least 2.4 metres off the ground. A good rule of thumb if to use anti-climb paint anywhere that\u2019s above head height.<\/p>\n

How long does it last?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Quality anti-climb paint isn\u2019t affected by weather and shifting temperatures, and can last up to three years between applications!<\/p>\n
