For centuries, timber was the default construction material of choice \u2013 and even today, it\u2019s still a hugely popular\u00a0<\/span><\/i>option\u00a0<\/span><\/i>for decking, fencing, and other home and garden products. But is that beginning to change? Paul Smith of F.H. Brundle gives his view.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a reason<\/span>\u00a0we\u2019ve been making things with timber for thousands of years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s strong. It\u2019s renewable. It\u2019s widely available \u2013 and it looks beautiful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But it\u2019s also<\/span>\u00a0got<\/span>\u00a0big drawbacks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Think about the hundreds of millions of structures and buildings that have been\u00a0made out of\u00a0timber throughout history.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are still stone castles and\u00a0<\/span>churches standing from centuries ago<\/span>. The oldest<\/span>\u00a0stone structures<\/span>\u00a0on earth date from around 2500 BC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0the vast<\/span>\u00a0majority of\u00a0<\/span>the timber buildings\u00a0<\/span>humans have constructed no longer exist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s because, to stay looking and performing its best, timber requires<\/span>\u00a0a lot of maintenance.<\/span>\u00a0Without\u00a0<\/span>regular sanding,\u00a0<\/span>painting and weatherproofing<\/span>, wood can rot<\/span>\u00a0or warp<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 and, eventually, disintegrate completely.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Durable, sustainable alternatives<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Timber was once the unchallenged material of choice for all sorts of domestic applications \u2013 fencing, decking, sheds<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But as stunning as they are when they\u2019re first installed, timber products are far from easy to keep looking their best. They\u2019re susceptible to rotting and warping if they\u2019re not regularly maintained \u2013 something which can be complex, costly and time-consuming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For a long time, the alternatives weren\u2019t especially inspiring.<\/span>\u00a0You could\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>something<\/span>\u00a0that performed better than\u00a0timber, but\u00a0looked worse. Or you could have timber<\/span>, enjoy the natural aesthetics<\/span>, but struggle with the ongoing maintenance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, that\u2019s thankfully changed. Driven by the need for more\u00a0<\/span>durable, affordable and sustainable\u00a0<\/span>substitute<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0for timber<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>forward-thinking manufacturers have develo<\/span>ped<\/span>\u00a0a number of\u00a0innovative,<\/span>\u00a0low-maintenance<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>alternatives\u00a0<\/span>\u2013<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>including WPC.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
