We\u2019ve come a long way from the era\u00a0<\/span>where the most valuable thing in a school was a chalkboard and some sports kit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Modern educational buildings have become multimedia hubs, full of millions of pounds of computers, tablets<\/span>, projectors and other state-of-the-art equipment \u2013 and for burglars, that<\/span>\u2019s made them more attractive targets than ever.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But when it comes to security, schools have a lot more than just thieves to contend with.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First and foremost, they\u2019ve got a\u00a0<\/span>duty of care towards their students \u2013 and to protect them from anyone or anything that might do them harm.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And if that wasn\u2019t challenging enough, they\u2019ve got to achieve\u00a0all of\u00a0the above without making a school that looks like a fortress<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Bare brick walls and barbed wire don\u2019t make<\/span>\u00a0for a particularly pleasant learning environment \u2013 and research suggests<\/span>\u00a0that clearly fortified buildings\u00a0actually attract\u00a0more criminal activity than those that aren\u2019t.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So how do you square that circle?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Perfecting your perimeter<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first\u00a0<\/span>place to start, unsurprisingly, is with the school perimeter itself. It\u2019s that more than anything else that\u2019s going to\u00a0<\/span>keep staff, students and other building users safe.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Conduct a comprehensive audit of the site\u2019s perimeter security. Many schools are old, and funding is limited \u2013 it\u2019s possible that whatever walling and fencing was\u00a0<\/span>installed originally may have degraded, and now not be fit for purpose.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All school infrastructure\u00a0has to\u00a0take a lot of punishment \u2013\u00a0<\/span>and if it\u2019s had to withstand decade<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0of teenagers kicking footballs against it, it\u2019s likely that a fence may no longer be up to scratch.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another useful exercise is to ask\u00a0<\/span>site users<\/span>\u00a0where they think problem areas might be \u2013 teachers, students, ground staff and others all use different areas around a school site, and all<\/span>\u00a0could provide valuable feedback<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If part of the site\u2019s existing perimeter needs replacing, the next question is what you should replace it with.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Solid barriers were once the norm, but in recent decades there\u2019s been a move away from more forbidding boundaries to solutions that you can see\u00a0through, and\u00a0are more aesthetically pleasing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
