If there\u2019s one thing we can say with certainty, it\u2019s this \u2013 wood isn\u2019t going anywhere.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People\u00a0have been making things\u00a0from timber for\u00a0hundreds of thousands of years.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We know that, even more than a million years ago,\u00a0early\u00a0humans were\u00a0fashioning primitive tools out of wood, as well as stone and animal bones\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and\u00a0while there\u2019s not much physical evidence left of their existence,\u00a0countless\u00a0forts, houses, boundaries and barriers have all been built using it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s no surprise why \u2013 wood is\u00a0naturally plentiful, renewable, strong,\u00a0and\u00a0easy to cut and transport,\u00a0not to mention\u00a0extremely attractive to look at.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact,\u00a0you might find yourself wondering why we\u00a0ever started using anything else.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But as fantastic as it is, wood has\u00a0drawbacks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why not wood?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Earlier, I said that literally\u00a0thousands\u00a0of buildings and other structures\u00a0have been made out of it\u00a0over the time human beings have been around.\u00a0But the vast majority of those no longer exist.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why? Because wood\u00a0is very difficult to maintain. Over years exposed to the elements, its susceptible to rotting\u00a0and warping\u00a0\u2013 and preventing that means regular maintenance,\u00a0that can be\u00a0costly and time-consuming.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That also means it\u00a0tends to need replacing more often \u2013 which means that,\u00a0despite its renewable nature,\u00a0it can often end up having a bigger environmental impact as a result.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So while\u00a0timber will always have a presence\u00a0in homes and gardens around the country, since the turn of the millennium, rapid advances in technology have seen traditional materials increasingly replaced\u00a0with alternatives that are stronger, longer-lasting and easier to maintain.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Outstanding alternatives<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of those is Wood-Plastic Composite \u2013 or WPC for short.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First invented in Italy in\u00a0the\u00a01960s,\u00a0WPC does what it says on the tin\u00a0\u2013 it\u00a0mixes ground wood particles and heated thermoplastic resin.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reason WPC is such a fantastic material is that it manages to deliver the timeless aesthetics of timber, without the drawbacks \u2013 the need for constant upkeep most prominently of all.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WPC has quickly become a leading material in the decking sector, as well as becoming popular for fencing, cladding and more.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0stronger\u00a0than wood, longer-lasting, and virtually maintenance free \u2013 boasting\u00a0resistance to fire, UV damage and splinters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But WPC isn\u2019t the only modern alternative challenging timber\u2019s dominance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aluminium was once a material you\u2019d associate with sleek commercial buildings and high-end windows and doors \u2013 but now, the style and strength that\u2019s made it so popular in other sectors is\u00a0seeing it increasingly adopted elsewhere, too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, it\u2019s been incorporated in a whole range of fencing and other home improvement solutions.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The characteristics\u00a0that make it so popular in other sectors also make it perfect for outdoor applications \u2013 it\u2019s extremely robust, simple to maintain, very lightweight and offers an excellent weight to strength ratio.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
