Since the turn of the millennium, interest in glass balustrade systems has boomed. But architects need to be aware of the regulations that govern their use. Paul Smith, Marketing Manager at F.H. Brundle, explains more.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard to think of anything that epitomises the sleek, minimalistic aesthetic that characterises much of modern design\u00a0more\u00a0than the glass balustrade.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They\u2019re an elegant, visually pleasing solution to an age-old problem \u2013 providing safety at height. No more need for ugly, oppressive barriers that block out natural light and spoil scenic views\u00a0\u2013 now there\u2019s a much more seamless alternative.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But balustrades \u2013 not glass ones, but ones made of wood, stone, marble and so on \u2013 are anything but modern. In fact, they\u2019re one of the oldest architectural elements there is.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are murals from the ancient kingdom of Assyria \u2013\u00a0encompassing parts of Iraq, Turkey and Syria as we\u00a0know them today \u2013 that depict buildings with balustrades from over 3,000 years ago.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s also evidence of their use in\u00a0India and China in ancient times \u2013 although interestingly, none whatsoever that they were ever used in Greece and Rome, despite their reputation for impressive architecture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, they didn\u2019t come into their own until over two thousand years later in Renaissance Italy, where their use became widespread. In the 1500s, they\u00a0featured on landmark buildings like the Villa Medici and in designs by Michaelangelo \u2013 and it was also in Italy that they first got their name.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As everyone reading this will know, a balustrade essentially consists of a horizontal \u2018rail\u2019 section, held up by many vertical balusters.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the architecture of the day, these balusters were often a bulb-like shape, which locals thought looked like pomegranate flowers \u2013\u00a0balaustra, in Italian. Unsurprisingly, it\u2019s from here that the name \u2018balustrade\u2019 was derived.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Adhering to Building Regs<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s sleek and stylish glass balustrades might not look all that much like\u00a0something you\u2019d find on the Villa Medici, but they serve fundamentally the same two key purposes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They exist to keep people safe \u2013 allowing them to admire the view in high-up\u00a0places, and\u00a0prevent accidents. And they exist to look good.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, one thing Michaelangelo \u2013 and the architects of ancient Assyria \u2013 didn\u2019t have to contend with is the large and often complex amount of regulation governing balustrade use that we do in 2021.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In residential settings in\u00a0the\u00a0UK, Building Regulations require that balustrades, or similar barriers, be used in spaces with a height difference of more than 600mm.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In non-residential applications they\u00a0have to\u00a0be used on staircases with more than two risers, and spaces where the height difference is over 380mm.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also strict regulations governing the height of glass used, which varies depending on the setting.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Approved Document K in the Building Regulations, when used in conjunction with stairs, landings, ramps, and edges of internal floors the balustrade must be 900mm in height. For external balconies and the edges of roofs, they\u00a0have to\u00a0be 1,100mm.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In public sector buildings, offices and retail settings, similar rules apply \u2013 balustrades must be 900mm for flights of stairs, 1,100mm for all other settings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Safety performance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition, there are several key performance markers balustrade products\u00a0have to\u00a0meet to ensure they\u2019re offering optimum safety performance.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first concerns \u2018line load\u2019 \u2013 the amount of horizontal force a balustrade can withstand on the top, as if someone was leaning against it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Another is \u2018uniformly distributed load\u2019, or the amount of force a product can withstand being applied to its midsection \u2013 while a third concerns \u2018concentrated load\u2019, or the sort of sudden impact that occurs if someone falls against a product, or some other accident occurs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In all three cases,\u00a0products\u00a0have to\u00a0demonstrate a certain level of performance,\u00a0laid out in Part B of Building Regulations and\u00a0BS EN 1991-1.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Particular attention\u00a0has to\u00a0be paid to\u00a0the type of building, as\u00a0different\u00a0structures with different uses and occupancy levels have different requirements.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
