Straightcurve® is available in two finishes; Weathering Steel and Galvanised Steel

Weathering Steel

Weathering steel (sometimes referred to as Corten steel), is an intentionally oxidised steel alloy. It forms a stable, protective layer of rust when exposed to the elements, eliminating the need for painting while providing long-term structural durability.

Unlike standard carbon (mild) steel, which continues to rust until it degrades structurally, weathering steel creates a dense surface oxidation layer (a patina). This patina seals the underlying metal from moisture, oxygen, and atmospheric pollutants ensuring structural integrity for decades, even in damp environments. Refer to the Straightcurve® longevity guide for more information.

Galvanised Steel

Protected by a hot-dip zinc coating, galvanised steel offers superior weather resistance and long-term durability without ever requiring a coat of paint. Where standard carbon steel breaks down through destructive rusting, galvanised steel relies on sacrificial protection—the zinc shell corrodes in place of the base metal, continuously sealing it against dampness, air, and soil pollutants. The result is total structural integrity built to last for decades.

This finish is also suitable for painting and powder coating, allowing you to customise your Straightcurve® installation.

FAQs

Can Straightcurve be installed on any type of soil?2026-08-28T13:39:04+01:00

Yes, Straightcurve edging and raised garden beds can be installed in almost any soil type, including heavy clay, sandy, rocky, or loose soil.

Depending on the specific ground conditions you encounter during installation, a few slight adjustments to the standard fixing method will ensure a secure fit:

• Soft or Sandy Soil: Standard fixing pegs may not hold securely in loose earth. Use longer pegs or anchor posts, or drive pegs in at opposing angles (cross-pegging) to create additional resistance against movement.

• Hard, Compact, or Rocky Soil: Pre-drilled pilot holes along the base edge of the panels allow you to place the stainless steel pegs at intervals. Pegs can be moved easily where rocks and stones may prevent full penetration of the substrate.

• Heavy Clay Soil: Clay expands and contracts significantly between wet and dry seasons. Ensure joints are properly locked and anchored with adequate ground stakes so soil movement doesn’t displace the edging alignment over time.

How long does Weathering Steel take to rust?2026-08-19T14:43:13+01:00

Weathering steel typically begins rusting within 1 to 3 weeks of weather exposure and reaches its full protective, stable patina in approximately 3 to 6 months depending on ambient humidity and rainfall.

Is Straightcurve garden edging safe for children and pets?2026-08-19T14:42:37+01:00

Yes. The top edge of Straightcurve profiles is engineered with a smooth, rolled lip to ensure there are no sharp metal edges above ground.

Do I need concrete to install Straightcurve garden edging?2026-08-19T14:41:18+01:00

No. Straightcurve edging uses heavy-duty steel connector plates and ground pegs driven directly into the soil, eliminating the need for concrete mixing or wet trades.

Can I connect Straightcurve Flex and Rigid profiles together?2026-08-19T14:37:28+01:00

Yes. Straightcurve Flex, Rigid, and Zero-Flex profiles feature standard connector plates, allowing you to transition seamlessly from a curved bed to a straight line.

What is the difference between Weathering Steel and Galvanised Steel edging?2026-08-19T14:36:33+01:00

Weathering Steel (often called Corten) forms a protective, warm rust-like patina when exposed to outdoor elements over 4–12 weeks. Galvanised Steel is zinc-coated to retain a bright, modern metallic grey finish that resists rust permanently.
