The terms broadly refer to thickness. Steel sheet is generally considered thinner — typically under 3mm — and is used for lighter applications including cladding, enclosures, and light fabrication. Steel plate is thicker, typically 3mm and above, and is used where structural strength or greater load-bearing capacity is required.
