No. Toughened glass cannot be cut, drilled, or altered after the heat treatment process. Any post-toughening modification will cause the panel to shatter instantly. All holes, notches, radiused corners, and size dimensions must be specified prior to production via tools like our Liveconfigurator™.
Under BS 6180 and Approved Document K, standard domestic balustrades with a handrail typically require 10mm or 12mm toughened glass. Frameless glass balustrades without a continuous handrail usually require 17.5mm or 21.5mm toughened laminated glass. Commercial applications with higher line load requirements (e.g., 1.5 kN/m or 3.0 kN/m) require thicker laminated glass configurations. Toughened (tempered) glass is a monolithic safety glass up to 5 times stronger than standard float glass. Toughened laminated glass consists of two toughened glass sheets bonded together with a plastic interlayer (PVB, EVA, or SGP). If a laminated pane breaks, the interlayer retains the glass in place, maintaining a safety barrier.
