Under UK building regulations, a frameless glass balustrade does not require a separate handrail provided the glass panel itself meets the minimum height requirement and the structural loading requirements for the location. The top edge of the glass becomes the graspable element. However, for staircases, a continuous graspable handrail is strongly recommended for safety and is required in commercial and public buildings.
